Migration, capitalism and a world without borders

Immigration controls and ideas surrounding citizenship, nationalism and belonging, are a central focal point for how racism is maintained in the neo-colonial world we find ourselves in. The imposition of identities that are bound up with imagined idea of 'the nation' increasingly controls the movement of people inside and outside of it. In the UK we have some of the worst immigration laws that effectively criminalize people for wanting to cross a geographical border, even if this is in the name of asylum which has, due to it tarnishing in the right wing press, become a dirty word.

This workshop, directly inspired by the methods of T.R.A.P.E.S.E collective, explores the history of Britain's immigration laws and offers practical tools for thinking, acting and living in a world without borders.

It is suitable both for people who are new to this area and wish to learn more about immigration policy in the UK and its histories and for people already involved in anti-immigration control struggles who want to explore the possibilities of a borderless world from the point of view of gender and sexuality.

The workshops can be tailored to your group needs so please get in touch with your particular requirements.

The workshop is structured around the following questions:

  • How does the UK's immigration policy create the conditions for racism in our communities?

  • How are immigration laws connected globally to capitalism and wider economic inequality?

  • How can we move towards a world where people can move where and when to without being criminalize and punished?
